S3 E.8 Being Boss Baby Brody’s Mama | A Chat with the Incredible City Girl Gone Mom
In this Episode
In today’s episode, Adriana and Mariah are joined by Dani Schaffer, also known as City Girl Gone Mom. The girls discuss everything from the different layers of gender norms to authentic connection. We seriously love Dani and her incredible family, so having her on the podcast is a dream come true!
Born and raised in NYC, Dani is a teacher turned blogger and mom of four. She attended NYU, met her now-husband there, and they moved to San Diego shortly after. Dani left her teaching job, and 9 years ago, she built a blog centered around authenticity. Documenting the growth of her family was natural to her – growth on her socials was slow and steady, until her youngest son, Brody (Boss Baby Brody!) became a superstar.
When Brody was 4, a video of him dancing to the Nutcracker caught the attention of large media outlets – we’re talking Oprah and the Huffington Post – this video had over 20 million views and shares! The thing that sets Brody apart from so many other young kids is his fearlessness and aspiration to be unequivocally himself. Princess dresses and all, Brody is smashing gender norms one day at a time.
Dani notes that there was no intentionality to change the world’s views on gender norms. All she has done is simply allowed Brody to be who he is. He naturally gravitates towards performance and all things sparkly! While Brody can’t read yet, we live in a world where anyone can say anything about you. Dani strives to give Brody love, support and confidence, because with that, he can handle it all.
Brody is the perfect mix between Freddie Mercury, Elton John, and Jack Black. He sings, dances, plays piano, and he’s truly killing the game. There is a true entourage of people that love and support Brody. So much so, Dani says that she has never bought a single princess dress for him - the community has gifted them!
With 4 kids, 4 different schools, and 7 different sports teams, life gets BUSY. Dani says that outsourcing help and having a collaborative Google Calendar has been crucial to her for staying on top of things. There’s no shame in asking for help – when you do, you have more time to grow. Gratitude is at the forefront of everything. If you have the privilege of being able to hire help, giving back and teaching your kids to do the same is so important.
The icon himself makes an appearance! Adriana and Mariah are fangirling. We get the inside scoop – Brody’s favorite things to do with his mom (Mama Gorgeous) are swimming, playing with dolls, dressing up, and making TikToks. He wants to be on Broadway when he grows up, and we are SO confident that he will be the star of the stage!
Dani closes today’s episode with some valuable parenting advice. Prioritize YOUR life when you have a baby, even if it means putting them in the stroller and walking to the nearest cafe for a daytime date. Never feel like you have to listen to other’s parenting instructions – if it works for you, that’s all that matters.
We hope you enjoyed today’s episode as much as we did - go show Brody and Dani some love, and we’ll catch you next time!
