67. Jett’s Birth Story

In this Episode

Welcome back to a very special episode of the Glow Through It podcast! This week, we are joined by Bill to tell the story of Jett’s birth. As some of you might already know, Jett wasn’t a planned pregnancy, and sticking to that same narrative, his birth wasn’t planned either – he came two and a half months early, on the same day as Ford’s birthday.

But before we get into it, we talked quickly about two things. First, how funny Ford is. His new catch phrase is “See ya, later, big guy!” Nobody knows where he got it from, but he literally changes the inflection of his voice when he says it and it’s the cutest thing ever. He’s also so funny, but sometimes he’s funny when he’s misbehaving and Bill and Adriana have to work really hard to stifle their laughs. We also talked about how your feelings towards your dog change when you become parents. We all still love Dylan, of course, but with two babies, Bill and Adriana just can’t give him the same time and attention that they used to. Upon hearing this, Mariah brought it back to Lady and the Tramp and how that dog had to run away from home to get her owners to appreciate her more. So Dylan, if you’re hearing this, run! Just kidding, we still love you Dyl!

Okay now let’s dive in and go back to April 10th. Adriana had been in the office that day, and she remembers crying to Nicole and Mariah. She had to have a test for gestational diabetes the next day, and she was just feeling so done with the pregnancy. The next day, she had a midwife appointment to get the bloodwork done, and she saw some spotting. She was having uncomfortable cramps that felt like Braxton-Hicks contractions, but being 10 weeks away from birth, she didn’t think much of it. The midwives confirmed that all was good, that the spotting wasn’t anything to be too concerned about, and that she should just call them if anything else came up.

Adriana went home, took a nap, and then for some reason felt called to catch up on all her work, and she did just that. As she was getting ready for bed, she remembers telling Bill how crazy it felt to be having these weird contractions on the same day that she went into labor with Ford. She also told him that she needed him to be on her side during this birth, and that he couldn’t let her give up no matter what happened. She was feeling really worried about it, especially since she was trying for a VBAC - a vaginal birth after Cesarean.

At around 11pm, she took a picture of Ford and posted it to Instagram, and then her contractions started up again. They kept getting closer and closer together – 20 minutes apart, then 10, then 6. At 1am, Adriana woke Bill up and told him that she was having contractions, but was still under the impression that she wasn’t in labor. Bill started to give her counterpressure, she took some magnesium to try to help the contractions, and then she threw up. At this point, she was feeling the pain, but of course, still fully in denial – she still had 10 weeks to go! She kept vomiting and thought she had gotten it out of her system, and then was finally able to sleep from 2am to 4am.

At 4am, when she was still feeling contractions, she called her midwife, who told her to take a bath, drink some electrolytes, and try to relax. So she did just that – but by the time she got out of the bath, she was freezing cold and needed Bill to give her more counterpressure because she was in so much pain. Ford was crying every time she screamed, and finally they decided that they had to call Adriana’s parents to come watch Ford. Her parents rushed to her house faster than ever, and as soon as her mom saw her, she told Adriana that she was having this baby tonight and she needed to call an ambulance. Finally, Adriana told Bill to call one, still thinking that she was not in labor and that all she needed was fluids.

The ambulance arrived, and she ran to it in between contractions. She didn’t even have time to put shoes on, and they almost didn’t let Bill come into the ambulance, but she wouldn’t leave without him. In the ambulance, Adriana - still not knowing she was fully in labor - did the last 20 minutes of labor strapped down to a gurney. At 5:53am, they got to the hospital and were taking her off the gurney and to the emergency room. All of a sudden, she reached down to feel and felt Jett’s skull. She screamed “I’m crowning!” to the emergency responders and they rushed her to a labor and delivery room. Bill pulled her pants off (shout out ByBruno – them things are TIGHT), and amniotic fluid sprayed all over Bill. Once her pants were off, Adriana gave one more push and Jett was out of her body. His birth time was 5:55am (angel numbers, much?!).

The nurse put him on her body, but she was so scared that he wasn’t okay that she wasn’t able to enjoy the moment, and immediately handed Jett back to the nurse. Jett was taken to the NICU, and all Adriana could say was, “What the f*ck just happened?” But on the bright side, his umbilical cord was beautiful.

Jett’s birth was traumatic, but redemptive. Adriana was able to get the VBAC that she wanted, and even though he had to spend a lot of time in the NICU while he grew to a healthy size, Jett is home and healthy now. It’s unexplained why he came so early – Adriana did all the tests and talked to all the doctors, but there was no explanation. It was a totally and completely normal pregnancy until his birth.

We are so grateful that baby Jett is home and healthy, and that he is developing the way that he is supposed to. Bill and Jett are literal twins and besties, which is the cutest thing ever. We definitely want to do an episode all about Adriana’s time in the NICU, so stay tuned for that.

Thanks for tuning in! Catch you next time.
