Let’s Talk Business | BONUS

In this Episode

We all remember the fear and uncertainty that came along with the start of the pandemic, and the fear that still lingers today. This phone call was recorded between Adriana and Mariah about a month into the pandemic - the LWP office had shut down, the girls were staying at home, and Adriana was in the throes of applying for a loan to help keep small businesses afloat.

Adriana goes on to explain how this has been the hardest season of being a CEO since starting the brand. Along with the frustration of trying to apply for a loan, seeing other companies get it, and having to wait for hers to be approved, she also had to navigate something that there was no guidebook for. She and other business owners alike all had to guide themselves and employees through something that nobody could have ever imagined, and something that they couldn’t truly control.

The pandemic also thwarted the company’s goals for the year, and put a new, much simpler one in place: stay afloat. While Adriana was able to keep all eight of her full-time employees at the time employed, and the company had been able to run remotely for over a month, it was still a scary time for Adriana and her team.

Through it all, though, Mariah had no doubts about Adriana’s leadership. Mariah reminisced on how nothing at LWP had gone smoothly - because there’s no step-by-step guide to running a small business - but how Adriana had nevertheless led her team fearlessly with the “Querer es poder” mindset that she’s always had. If you believe it, you can achieve it. So yes, while it was a scary time for everyone in the world, Mariah leaned on and believed in Adriana, which made the uncertainty of it all just a little less scary.

The silver lining for Adriana was in her team – despite the difficulty of getting the loan, despite the goals being tossed, despite everything else going on for her personally and throughout the entire world, she knew that she had a team of strong women behind her who would continue to help the wheels of LWP turn, and who would be there for Adriana whenever she needed.

It’s difficult in times like these to feel like our problems matter – yes, our company struggled, but how can we compare that to the people who have lost their lives, or who have lost friends and family because of this pandemic? What we have to remember, though, is that everything is relative; just because we are lucky enough to have our health and our loved ones, doesn’t mean that our problems hold less significance. Times like these teach us that we need to show ourselves grace, because we’re all just doing the best that we can.

We have to remember that this too shall pass, and we’ll be stronger because of it.
