S2 E.9 Modern Mom Probs with Mommy Expert Tara Clark

In this Episode

In today’s episode, Adriana and Mariah welcome blogger and mommy expert Tara Clark to talk all things Modern Mom Probs, social media pressures, “mom shaming”, and Tara’s new book launching this April! Having Tara on the podcast now is perfect timing, because Adriana is 38 weeks pregnant and just about ready to POP.

First, let’s get to know Tara! She attended college at Villanova, and shortly after, she landed a position in the social media department at Nickelodeon. Fun fact: Tara runs the Facebook page for Dora the Explorer! How cool is that?! Total main character energy.

In 2012, Tara welcomed her first son. Her job at Nickelodeon was all or nothing: working part-time was not an option. She chose nothing. As a stay-at-home mom living in NYC, Tara says that there were really no online communities for moms. So, in 2016, she launched her social media account, NYC Mom Probs.

The account began as a creative outlet. It’s no surprise that her page blew up very quickly — from memes to inspirational motherhood content, there were so many relatable layers. Tara notes that this anonymous meme page really evolved into female empowerment with a strong community. With this evolution, Tara rebranded to Modern Mom Probs and established a blog, which we absolutely love!

Adriana, Mariah, and Tara talk about the art of ALWAYS having a messy house with young children. Let’s be real, stuff accumulates…quickly. Adriana (admittedly) is a naturally messy and spontaneous person, and Bill is the exact opposite. Bill makes a quick appearance, and Tara reassures him that no matter how messy the house is in the beginning, as kids get older, it becomes much easier. Everyone send Bill some good energy to get him through 4 years (or more) of a messy house.

New moms are often inundated with unsolicited advice. Some good, some not so good. Tara provides Adriana (and all other new moms!) with some solicited advice. The advice is short and sweet: order takeout. In the beginning, you will be in survival mode. The last thing you want to think about are meals and snacks, so planning ahead can definitely alleviate some stress!

Speaking of unsolicited advice…mom shaming is unfortunately a reality of today’s world. Adriana and Mariah ask Tara how she navigates that. Tara suggests that if you disagree with another mom’s strategies, keep scrolling and move on. However, should you feel the need to comment, do it kindly. Kindness on social media is SO important - people may think that social media creators won’t see their comments or take them to heart, but they do! Respect each other’s opinions and be kind, no matter the circumstance.

Now, the girls talk about something that many of us wonder: how does Tara balance being a mom AND an entrepreneur? Tara provides a beneficial narrative shift for all of us: instead of using the word balance, use the word effectiveness. Ask yourself how you can be the most effective in your position, whether it’s being a mom, friend, entrepreneur, or sister, or whatever else you may be. Utilizing this mindset will help us get ahead and normalize that everything may not be in complete equilibrium, and that is OKAY!

Motherhood in general is a learning experience – there is no set way to do things. As you glow through it, you will learn what works and what doesn’t. Tara tells us her favorite and most challenging parts of this journey. The cuddles will always be a favorite, and a challenging part is managing your expectations in certain areas. Every person has different strengths, and if we tap into those, we become powerful.

We wrap up today’s episode talking about Tara’s book Modern Mom Probs launching in April! This book has 99 different topics, covering everything from pregnancy and nursing to sleeping and meals. Basically, it’s the hands-on guide to navigating all of your modern mom probs!

We hope this episode was insightful to all the moms out there - go show Tara some love, and catch you next time!
