S1 E.9 The Life Update

In this Episode

In this episode, Adriana and Mariah sit down live and in-person for the first time in 2 months to record this episode! Six feet apart, of course!

Broadcasting live from Adriana’s backyard, the girls give updates on what’s been happening in their lives since COVID started, what’s happened with Little Words Project, Adriana’s infertility journey, and more.

To start, Adriana and Mariah reflected on the biggest lesson that they’ve learned since the start of the pandemic. It’s important to look at things from a broader perspective sometimes, or else we get lost in the unknown and the anxiety that comes with living through a pandemic. For Adriana, the biggest lesson that she learned is that it’s okay to slow down – she’s recognized that it’s okay for her to not be so involved in certain things regarding her business, and that sometimes it’s okay to take a step back. And while we recognize and appreciate all of the heroes who aren’t necessarily able to slow down during the pandemic, we can also take the times that we’re in as an opportunity to see what’s going on around us, take a deep breath, and see that in the grand scheme of things, not everything is as important as it may seem in the moment.

For Mariah, the biggest lesson that COVID brought was the importance of saying no sometimes. With the pandemic and a couple family members who are older or immuno-compromised, Mariah took on the responsibility of doing a lot for her family – grocery shopping, running errands, and making sure that everyone had what they needed to remain safe and healthy. With that, on top of still balancing her job, came a lot of opportunities where she had to say no to other things – be it FaceTimes with friends, socially distant catch-ups, or whatever else, she saw the value in taking time for yourself, and knowing that sometimes, that comes with saying no to other people. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

As if COVID wasn’t difficult enough to navigate on its own, Adriana and Bill have also been going through their infertility journey. Since the last time we talked about it on the podcast, they have gone through one retrieval round, which went well, but not great. The round could have given them more options, but unfortunately it didn’t, so they decided to go through a second retrieval round. At this point, Adriana talked about how Bill has been there through every step of the way with her. Even though he isn’t allowed to physically go into the doctor’s appointments with her, he’s been waiting for her in the parking lot after every one, and just knowing that he’s there with her through it all makes her that much more excited and hopeful that they will be parents.

Other than that, there isn’t much else to say about these strange and unknown times. We haven’t been able to travel to any trade shows, and the brand marketing world is in disarray because nobody knows what’s coming next. Partnerships are on a standstill because everything is still so unknown. BUT, we would be doing ourselves and this podcast a disservice if we just focused on the negative – if we didn’t “glow” through it, may we say. The good news about this strange time in the business world is that it’s exciting to think about and experience where things will go once everything starts to look up from the pandemic. We’re in completely uncharted territory, and to see where we’ll go from here on out is exciting, and just knowing that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel helps us keep pushing forward.

On another positive note, we’ve also tried to think about some of the beautiful things that have come out of this quarantine period. For Adriana, it was being able to spend more time with Bill, working on their house together, and again, learning how to slow down and not be so go-go-go all the time. For Mariah, she’s learned about the beauty of alone time and allowing herself to grow to be ready for new opportunities in life.

We’ll be honest - quarantine sucks, COVID sucks, and we’re all confused. But, we’re also hopeful that looking back on this time, we’ll be able to see the deeper meaning in it, and know that it all happened for one reason or another. At the end of the day, we’re living through history, and we have to give it meaning. Hopefully this episode was able to show you that even amidst all the crappy things in life, there are still a hundred other reasons to look on the bright side, see the good, and keep glowing through it all. Until next time!
