In this Episode

In this impromptu episode, Mariah calls Adriana as she’s in the midst of renovating her house to tell her a story about a DM she received on Instagram – but don’t worry, we’re happy she decided to record the conversation.

So here goes – Mariah received a DM from a girl on Instagram (we’re going to call her Emily) who explained that the two of them had actually been talking to the same guy at one point. Now, this was a while ago, and the relationship wasn’t even mentioned on the “Dating as a Millenial” episode. We can call him Football, because, well… he played football. But, point being that Emily was talking to Football at the same time that Mariah had a thing with him. At the time that the relationship was happening, Emily was jealous of Mariah – how could she not be? They were both talking to the same guy, and the weekend when Mariah went to visit him, he left Emily on read the whole time!

However, after the relationship was over with both girls, Emily decided to listen to our “Dating as a Millennial” episode, and her whole view on the situation changed. Instead of being jealous of Mariah, Emily flipped the switch – she started to admire the way that Mariah handled herself on social media, and in real life, and everything that the LWP brand stood for. Because of this change in mindset, she felt called to reach out to Mariah and tell her about the situation. What followed in their DMs was a conversation about how Mariah had no idea that he was talking to other girls while they were dating, and a realization that women need to stick together.

Bouncing off our episodes about dating, we’ve realized that because men have so many options available to them, that also means that not only are they super willing to look behind door number two before really getting to know the girl in front of them, they’re also just as willing to look behind door number two while they’re still entertaining the option of another girl! Which, as we all know, is messed up. So when does this cycle end?

Maybe it comes to an end when we as women start standing up for each other instead of making excuses for the men that we’re seeing. The way that Emily was able to reach out to Mariah was inspiring in a way because she felt so safe and sure that Mariah would rather know about Football talking to other girls than denying it. What we’ve learned from this encounter is that it’s important to band together as women. Having each other’s backs in the sense that if we see that our guy is talking to or with another girl, we’ll reach out to that girl to dodge a bullet for the both of us.

Because at the end of the day, does it suck that men find it so hard to be loyal? Obviously. Should it be such a common occurrence that we find ourselves in these situations? Of course not. But, at the end of the day, it is an unfortunate reality. Looking out for each other as women is important.

In the same way that looking out for each other is important, it’s also essential to not be comparing ourselves to the women we see online. We have such easy and immediate access in this day and age to so many people, and we see so many women online that we can compare ourselves to, just like Emily did with Mariah when they were both dating Football. But, comparison sucks, and it’s unproductive. And, we’ve said it once and we’ll say it again - social media is nothing more than a highlight reel. People may not be posting their lowest lows, and we just have to see their feeds for what they are - the peaks, and never the valleys.

This topic lends itself to a much longer and more in depth episode, so stay tuned for that – but for now, we hope you enjoyed this little bonus episode, and we hope it inspired you to do something kind today.
